Discourse markers in academic and non-academic writings of Thai EFL learners

The ability to use discourse markers (DMs) create cohesion and coherence of a text is essential for EFL learners at the university level express ideas thoughts in various types writing assignments, such as academic papers reflections. Hence, this study attempted shed more light on DMs non-academic writings Thai learners. main objective was investigate types, overall frequency, differences, similarities both styles writing. Sixty essays, consisting 20 essays 40 ones, were selected primary data. Academic from Critical Reading Writing course Xavier Learning Community (XLC), Thailand, while ones XLC English Newsletter. data analyzed based Fraser’s taxonomy (2009). results showed that 2.521 distributed five namely contrastive discourse, elaborative inferential temporal spoken markers, identified essays. most frequently used DM (EDM), F=1,703. This concluded raising awareness would assist producing an effective coherent piece
